Welcome

Since 2000, the “Children’s Parliament” has been an annual event, involving 11 year olds from 10 borough Primary schools each year. It is a joint initiative of the H&F Urban Studies Centre with H&F Education and Environment Departments. The work is carried out in the schools by the Urban Studies Centre and the Education and Environment Departments provide funding for the project.

With the help of the Urban Studies Centre, the children initially identified an issue of concern and then spent several weeks researching their topic and preparing a submission for the Parliament.

Part of this research has involved the children in working with various representatives from the local community –for example, council officers, environmental groups, local business and the local police.

The themes this year cover Children’s Rights, Community History, Traffic Issues, Safety in the Local Environment, Developing a School Council, Biodiversity in the School Grounds, Peer Pressure, Behaviour in the School Playground, College Park Home Zone, Local Environment Action Plan.

The parliament took place in the Council Chamber of Hammersmith Town hall on March 13th 2002. About 100 children took part, with two elected speakers from each school making presentations on their chosen theme.

The event was chaired by Cllr David Williams, Hammersmith & Fulham’s Deputy for Education and Cllr Stephen Cowan, Chair of the Council’s Environment and Regeneration Scrutiny Panel. The councillors were questioned by the children following their presentations.

A video of the event has been distributed to all the participants.
